Japan: Goodbye Guantanamo

Close Guantánamo action in JapanIn Japan, activists collected pictures of hooded participants with message placards including ‘Close Guantanamo’ and ‘Justice for detainees’.

The ‘Good bye, Guantánamo’ action targeted Amnesty International local groups, other civil organizations and academics to screen the film Taxi to the Dark Side across Japan.

Monday, January 26: The Israeli army’s use of white phosphorus in densely populated civilian areas of Gaza has captured much of the world’s media interest. However, the Israeli forces also used a variety of other weapons against civilian residential built-up areas throughout the Gaza Strip in the three-week conflict that began on 27 December.

Among these are flechettes - tiny metal darts (4cm long, sharply pointed at the front and with four fins at the rear) that are packed into120mm shells. These shells, generally fired from tanks, explode in the air and scatter some 5,000 to 8,000 flechettes in a conical pattern over an area around 300 metres wide and 100 metres long.

Obama’s Inauguration Day in Nairobi, Kenya

At 9am Nairobi time (6am London time and 1am Washington DC time), we started setting up our table to promote the SMS Obama100Days action with the Kenyan Amnesty International staff – Miriam, Felicitas and Njoroge.  The SMS action is to outreach to Kenyans, for those who may not have access to the online petition at www.obama100days.org, and ask them to add their voice to the global petition for the Counter Terror with Justice campaign.

Demonstration held outside the US embassy on 21 January 2009 in Jakarta urging President Obama to Counter Terror with Justice. Key messages at the demonstration:

  • Close Guantánamo! Yes, you can! (Tutup Guantánamo! Adna bisa!)
  • Stop Torture & other Ill Treatment Everywhere! (hentikan penyiksaan di mana-mana)
  • Keep the promise for CHANGE! (Tepati Janjimu untuk Perubahan)
  • No More Torture in Indonesia (Tiada Lagi Penyiksaan di Indonesia)
  • Indonesia Youth for Human Dignity (Kaum Muda Indonesia untuk Martabat Kemanusiaan)

Czech Republic - street activism in Prague

Activists in Prague staged an event to mark the seventh anniversary of Guantánamo. Passerbys signed the petition urging the Czech Republic as the new EU president to urge the closure of Guantánamo.

The event was marked with a cage in the centre of town, with activists dressed in orange jumpsuits.
