A group of peaceful women protesters who wanted to mark their opposition to the Maldives’ new president found themselves on the receiving end of a violent assault.
Charged with batons and doused with pepper spray by the Maldivian army (MNDF), they fell foul of the authorities as they attempted to approach a rally in Addu City addressed by President Waheed on 26 February.
The 20 women were ahead of a crowd of about 70 when the police stopped them, saying they had been ordered not to allow Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) supporters in. The women wore the yellow headbands usually donned by MDP members.
The demonstrators halted their march and began to chant slogans against President Waheed, who was making his speech a couple of hundred metres away.
They were then attacked by an army contingent which has been deployed alongside police in recent weeks.
Army personnel arrived from a side alley behind the women, who were then caught between them and the police line.
Separated from the rest of the demonstrators, the 20 were charged by soldiers who wielded batons and used pepper spray, pushed them around, and kicked them on their legs and ribs.
Amnesty International learned that one woman had her arm twisted and sprained when MNDF soldiers grabbed her.
They then took her glasses off, forced her to open her eye and sprayed it with pepper spray. She said they pressed her against the wall and kicked her with their boots.
Another woman said that they began to beat her on her breast, repeatedly shouting they would see to it that she does not breast feed again.
A third woman showed her badly bruised arm where she said that soldiers had severely and repeatedly beaten her.
Amnesty International condemns the Maldivian army’s use of excessive force against these women. Detailed testimonies from the victims revealed no evidence of the protesters being involved in any act of violence.
As the rest of the protesters ran away, army and police personnel chased them, allegedly beating anyone they caught. During the chase, clashes occurred between security forces and demonstrators. At one point, a policeman was reportedly injured by a stone thrown at the security forces.
Security personnel reportedly then entered the MDP office in Hitadhoo, where more than a dozen other women protesters had run for shelter. They chased the women into the storage room of the building and began to beat them.
Since the ouster of former President Mohamed Nasheed on 7 February, the Maldives have seen demonstrations by the opposition MDP and counter demonstrations by President Waheed’s supporters.
Human rights have become heavily politicized in the protests, with each side blaming their opponents for promoting violence.
During clashes between the MDP supporters and security forces on 8 February, up to 10 buildings, including police headquarters and a court building, were burnt down in Addu city, an MDP stronghold.
The government has blamed MDP supporters for the destruction. Scores of people were detained in Addu following the 8 February clashes and were tortured or otherwise ill-treated in custody.
Police have continued to deny torturing the detainees or using excessive force against MDP protesters.

I condemn brutality by any side. It would’ve been fair if Amnesty included the brutal crackdown on continuous 22 days of protest against Mohamed Nasheed when he was in power. Lot of women were hurt in those.
Why has Amnesty international failed to observe when police attacked non-violent protesters were smashed and attacked by police officers when Mohamed Nasheed (previous president) was in power during the period from January 1st to February 7 2012?
barbaric
Please be aware that there are two sides to this story. The unrest on teh 8th of February resulted in looting and burning of MNDF/Police posts and quarters and it is public knowledge that uniforms and other equipment such as tear gas have been stolen and have yet not been accounted for. I have heard many people state that these acts of violence were set up by hardcore MDP members using the stolen uniforms and equipment. So please do not take this at face value. There is much more to this. I am from Addu and some eye witesses to these events believe that the people who actually ran around were not MNDF and what you see is a fabrication of truth.
During Nasheed’s period, there were no blood shed.. but within the first 48 hours, recent government there were brutuality and blood shed in Male’ and in other areas of Maldives and it contineous like that. because this government is not an Elected government but was forcefully given by MNDF and POLICE to Dr.Waheedh.. Amnesty could have posted the pictures from 8th Feb,2012 when MNDF and POLICE beaten up the MDP supporters during their peaceful rally in Male’ including the former President Nasheed..
Since the Rebel Forces took over the Maldives the Mercenaries or the Maldives Security Forces are using brutal, barbaric, inhumane methods, beating, assaulting, harassing, arbiteral arresting and other methods to terrorize the population to cover the coup. With the current trend, people will get annoyed and can no more control their patience and one day they will come out and face these Betrayers which will cause more harm to everyone.
I do not belong to a party and I do not want to be and I really do not care who becomes president as long as the person who wins the post is good to the country and its peaople. I do not condone violence by anyone either and I do not condone using kids as shields and exposing kids to violence and abusive language. it must be recognised that these women went out on the streets tagging along their kids and hurtling abusive language at the MNDF and Police officers, throwing money at them and insulting them when it has been announced repeatedly over and over again not do anything to provoke violence. Their protests were neither peaceful nor right. If you heard the announcements that were made, the language they used, you would know what they did was not with peace in mind. Furthermore, premeditated offenses were launched against public by people who were set up for that and blame was spread to MNDF and police.
There was no “brutal” crackdown during 22 days of protest when Nasheed was in power. The protesters were breaking shops, throwing rocks, throwing fireballs in which on police officer caught fire and did a lot of many other things. But there was no crack down like this on them. They were tear-gassed and removed or held for 24 hours. When Dr Waheed comes to power, the whole game changes.
Wondering WHO outside would still believe there was no coup, there is no brutality, no destroying, no …. where is the international democratic community now ? USA ??? India ???
Brutality by anyside is wrong! I’ve seen police beating the protestors while Nasheed was in power so it’s unfair Nasheed to adovcate brutuality & human rights
Stop lying… Shame to call you’ll Maldivians . There was no beating of women during President Nasheed’s protests….this is a brutal military state now.. Everywhere they are beating and killing civilians .. The man called the president use his fists like Hitler in every speech he gives …
i am a maldivian and i dont belive that the guy who ruled us before was ruling with any good intention for his people…and anything he did during his 3 years he did just for show i cant belive that some people dont see the guy for who he is truly .. i mean the guy promoted not a democracy but and anarchist state i mean some of the mps under mohamed nasheed practically gave orders to the police to do this and that..and when ever some mdp supporter was arrested for anything they sometimes had demanded them to be released threatening the police with there jobs this is the reality but maldivian democratic partys tryin to show the world something else and some people who got gains though them ruling the countrys shouting because he fell of his throne and they can get no more i mean its a fact that some mdp mps got rich overnight its still there to see the bought houses..got bmw cars..got million dollar projects this is the reality..and when they finally fell they come out shouting we want elections but it was clear the guys a liar he stepped down on his own infront of the media for all to see why couldnt he say then even that hes being forced ..fact is hes just another anarchist show off nut who is a fake mohamed nasheed is the worst guy for president period
and i wonder why amnesty international always starts to talk like this when ever nasheed says something without checking for the truth in things it looks so one sided i mean rnt u supposed to be independent .. u guys all belong to a country right what does ur police or military do when a so called peaceful protest gets out of hand and the protesters start attacking and even start burning ur court houses, police stations and induvidual homes just because they were not on ur side this is the maldivian democratic partys true face anyone can deny it but come see for ur self what the truth is and why he fell out of power ..
For all Maldivians who are defending the actions of the police and mndf you must be blind or Maumoon and his gang of thugs must be paying you a lot to be with those barbaric humans!
This is RUTHLESS. Where is the international community?
This is RUTHLESS, where is the international community? There has never been this kind of ruthless behaviour in the last three years, under the first democractically elected govt. Where is UNITED STATES? WHY ARE THEY SILENT?
Just look at how unfair the media and so-called human rights activist are… when President Nasheed was brutally beating the opposition-then, where was everybody? Where was everybody when protesters had to go to nearby countries to get treatment from the injuries caused by the police? Why the double standard? Just because President Nasheed has excellent connections doesn’t mean he should be portrayed as an angel when he was ruling. True that he was good at gaining publicity, but what’s wrong is wrong and should be wrong, always.
If any women…no… if any person had been faced with any brutality, it should be stated wrong and be investigated. But not when only certain people are faced with such situations.
Amnesty should not be an organization who reports incidents of those that have the loudest voice but those of whose cry is loudest.
As an Amnesty supporter I would just like to say we try as best we can to be impartial, whether we address human rights issues that result from legitimate or illegitimate governments. However, it is illogical to say that attacking women can be in any way justified by saying someone has done it in the past. Women have been attacked by men from cavemen times but we are in the 21st century now – men must be asked to behave as civilized human beings now.
The Hitler which you (ash) is referring to seems fit only to former president mohamed nasheed. Who took the constitution onto his hands, who started to kidnap court judges from their homes, who started using abusive languages in their party rallies in the public infront of hundreds of children, who started threatening other political party members and last of all but not least who gave violent and notorious criminals (which were so hardly apprehended by the maldives police), a chance to freely roam in the capital city of maldives which would prey on thousands of innocent people… it was all done by our former president nasheed. Not only local civilians have rights…. Members of the police and the army are also human beings which are entitled to those rights. so think before you talk.
There is nothing much to talk.Everything is very clearly seen.Pictures and videos as well. And the interviews of the people who were beaten up by the force.I guess that is enough for an evidence. There is no way that they can claim this is not a coup. Also it is hard for them to convince Maldivians.
Those who purposely lie saying President Nasheed was also brutal, send even a single photo or video clip showing proof to Amnesty. There are 2 TV stations owned by the then opposition of Nasheed. They do not have a single shot. Why? Because Nasheed never ordered nor would have tollerated such behaviour from Police or the military.
I wonder why amnesty suddenely showed their concern for maldivian citizens.. where was amnesty when anni supporters poured boiling water on a policeman.what u see is half truth told to u by anni.. and also if we don’t support president nasheed and his barbaric ways it doesn’t mean we support maumoon or we support violence. It actually is nasheed who is responsible to all what is happening to this country and he should be ashamed to call himself a democratic leader..
To all those who defend the Police & MNDF brutality, FYI, Amnesty International is an international organization and they are very professional people. they are neither supporters of Nasheed nor enemies of his opppsitions. if there had been any brutality during nasheed’s 3 years .. the opposition should have contacted them and they could have come and investigated. so sad that u take them in same line with maldivian news papers and other biased media.
how can you people say this didnt happen or they shud mention about the police headquarters were on fire..yes they were and they were done by the police themselves..there have been pictures aswell..but still they are beating humans..they cant be replaced..but buildings can be replaced!! where is ur humanity! i cant believe you ppl who dont believe these thing..open you eyes a lil bit more and look at whats happening..youtube the videos on 8th of february 2012 in male.. the protester had a peaceful demonstrations wen the police just brutally kicked them around without any remorse! i cant believe you are saying you all are muslims wen u dont even have a heart towards your own kind!. shame on u ppl!!!
Past 3 years no one been reported injured or beaten by police. This is 100% sure. The whole world believes Nasheed is a democratic leader. He proofed that to the world already. That is the reason why amnesty international always starts to talk like this whenever Nasheed says something. The world was not sleeping during the past 30 years of long period, and past 3 years. Those 30 years were more than enough time for the world to learn everything; behaviour and attitude of those people who were in power, and to compare the factual difference of Nasheed & Gayoom’s government. What happened now is; those people came into power by using the same technique they had used during past 30 years, to uphold their regime. We, Maldivians are not from another planet. This is the earth, our world. Other people like amnesty international too have rights to talk about us and tell us things what is right & wrong and things what we did wrong. The different is, it is easy to admit and consider realism from democratic people who they have been proofed that to democratic people. Amnesties international never decide things without proven fact. Amnesty international is not just a name. Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights to be respected and protected.

Other than the Police and MNDF personnel there are thugs of Yamin (The brother of previous Dictator Qayyoom) wearing Police and MNDF uniforms… To stop these cruelty we need the support of international community. I suuport to President Nasheed and MDP against my boss. I am very much worried about my job at Villa Shipping & Trading Company.
Its a shame on us maldivians dat we confront and quarrel with each other in the name of politics. Nasheed is dividing our people. It’s a joke when he talks about violence by the security forces. When hundreds of people took out to the streets and demanded release of criminal court chief judge he once said on television dat he is unaware of any such demands by the people. He refused to release him. It continued for eighteen long days, several women and men were injured, even rubber bullets were used as a last resort by the police. On the night before 7th of February(the day mr. Nasheed resigned) MDP activists also took out to the streets in support for the government a violent clash was imminent when police arrived at the scene. Police maintained their position to any such clash. I was there, people were angry and loud. Suddenly MNDF arrived at the scene and took over from the police. MNDF took charge, and as soon as police left MNDF also left the scene, it was as if they have abandoned their people, some officers even refused to leave. Then it was complete chaos, it was battle ground, concrete blocks and stones rained on us. There was blood everywhere. Somebody must have given MNDF the order to flee the scene. Nasheed left his people to kill each other, I will not buy it when he says dat he resigned for the safety of his people. He resigned because he realised dat he has lost his credibility among the security forces cos of such abductions of people and provoking violence among his people. That night as theme police officers got to know about the incident, they lost their cool and went straight to MDP haruge(main MDP gatherings are held here, it was the same place where nasheeds finance minister was striped naked for seen in a car with maumoons younger brother yaaameen, and yet MDP preach human rights) and stormed da place, this group of police officers later gathered in front of the MNDF headquarters refused orders, later whole of the police force joined them, and at day break some MNDF members joined them. And demanded that mr. Nasheeds resignation. And yet nasheed says dat it was a coup, nobody pointed no guns at him, he resigned at his free will. And now he is playing dat same old game. Blaming dat the current government is mostly of “Islamic extremists”, he knows dat dis tag will put the current government in a less favourable position among most of the western governments and orgernisations. He was a preacher of violence even before he was elected and now he is preaching people to go after the police an mr. Waheen on 1st of march dat is today, let’s see what happens, I pray dat there be no blood spilt and no violence.
There hundreds of videos of a few weeks of police violence flooding the internet on youtube. I suggest you judge for yourself. Good bad whatever president or what crime you have committed you cannot violate the rights of human beings. If there were any beating done during president Nasheeds time then why has no one gone to court? why has no one uploaded a video? why has the public not talked about it?
This report can be seen as nothing but one sided. From 2005 until now, please go back and see the multiple incidences of brute attacks on Maldives Police by MDP activists, including ramming a bus into a Police line. On the night in question live reports on various local newspapers prove that the violence started at around 10.30pm near Sfarafuddin School when a crowd of MDP protesters tried to break off a Police cordon and disrupt President Waheed’s meeting in the school. They cannot just say they were trying to voice their grudges as MDP’s leadership had announced that they will do everything they can to ensure the President cannot step in Addu. In addition the violence created by MDP activists in Feydhoo on the same morning is enough for Police not to believe that the intentions were peaceful, and it was so as the crowd, with women in front and thugs behild started throwing stones at the police. Three were injured, one seriously. How is that Amnesty missed this? Whatever happened at MDP Haruge happened after this. With tear gas, unforms and batons pilfered just a week earlier there is no way anyone can say for sure yet who caused the violence out side MDP Haruge, DRP Office and some private residences. Police brutality is something that will not be tolerated by any society. At the same time violence against Police with women and children as shields is a cowardly act as reactions from Police will undoubtedly injure people and what MDP from the very beginning wanted are pictures to prove that they are the victims. The fact is till today, most violent confrontations and damage to public property are somehow related to MDP.
one should see how this went and why it came so far.As a Maldivian i would say that this country has breath in to democracy commencing from 7 th Feruary 2012.before also some people were claiming they are the heroes of democracy…i wonder where did it go now!!!MDP has not more than 50000 people…i believe this figure is now decline too..the other 150000 people, on the other hand calling for peace and unity in the country while MDP protesters burn down house, government offices and destroying without hesitation..IS THIS DEMOCRACY!!!!your wrights end where the wrights of the person’s starts!!!!we are about 300000 people and its for every body to act according to the law and order for a smooth running of the country.on 7 Feb 2012 the police stood for the constitution and to protect it…They were demanding for assurance from the higher persons that they would not order unconstitutional orders!!!for 22 days and nights people were for demanding of the release of the senior judge whom the former government have abducted unconstitutional y.their demands were not met..on 6 th Feb 2012 night they the police were asked to leave the ground and later the defence force too came and they were also asked to leave the grund…they obeyed!!!!but the two parties were fighting with what ever they have got…that was unbelevable so that grew and grew..and there came a point where enough is enough
you need to see extremism from two sides…
Wonder why Amnesty International have to beleive what ever our Ex President says, it would have been better if you had checked on both sides what is really happening before issuing a statement like think. So sad an organisation like you are so one sided
Sad sad sad. How could Amnesty International report like this about our country? If you were here to investigate then you must also have seen the results of terrorism acts of those so called peaceful protesters. Just imagine the amounts of bruises they would have shown you while the armed forces tried to stop these TERRORIST acts. Please make your mental math with the actual bruises you’ve seen and you will realize there aren’t much.
Truth will prevail……
Today, the world is witnessing just another example of how dictators prevail over peoples wish. USE OF FORCE. How degrading one could be if he had to beat up old women to remain in power. What type of a mindset would allow this? Today I am ashamed to be called im a Maldivian and a Muslim.
I was there while me friends were chased and attacked by the taitor waheed’s defence forced. Our media has been hijacked by those terrorists. I know what I saw, and neither dhitv or vtv can fool me with their propaganda.
To all those MNDF & Police writing these messy and unjustifiable comments to try and convince Maldivians and foreigners that the military coup leader waheed as president of Maldives….you are only fooling yourselves.
Alas! pls do something to stop beating.
Those who defend the actions of the President ,who is ’supposedly’ ruling but in truth it is the military who rule now and Waheed is just the puppet who will take all the blame later and he should answer to the public when the day comes, is just as wrong as the perpetrators of these acts. Clearly they are the few who has all along been supporting and benefitting from the regime of Maumoon and his gang of followers who forced our elected President who had been a beacon of hope for the oppressed and those dreaming of justice and fair rule. All these thugs who are in power now does not even care for the public if not they would have agreed to an election by now to resolve this issue.
Shame on Amnesty International to report without proper investigation. You should investigate the matter withour being biased to any side. For instance today 14 Police officers were seriously injured by MDP activists. MDP is using women and children as a shield and luring them towards police – just to show off to people like you. And to get reports like this. Shame on You Amnesty International.
Who ever what ever they say if anyone thinks Nasheed has not done anything i would advice that very person to go physically and see what has been achieved… also Nasheed is a human being he cant be 100% he can do his best and give 99%. in his three years protests have taken place in numerous counts but even if we agree or not Nasheed has never passed an order to take brutal force against any protest i believe a lot of people will agree Nasheed will and has said ” let them protest after all if some people are protesting then only we will know were we are lacking behind and whats to be corrected ” so dont say Nasheed didn’t do anything for this country he has done a lot…. on the present situation the forces of this country are using their power way beyond our imagination…. it is true the police and MNDF are using brutalism to put fear as the high command of police has said he will show the people how dangerous police can be and he will make people fear police… that’s what happening today… i wounder were is these international organisations. i ask the international comity’s are you all scared of the Maldives police and MNDF or are you scared of Waheed ?
Baaqee waheed out….ARREST
To those who say Amnesty should not defend the rights of these victims: you are wrong. Amnesty should.
To those who say Amnesty has not spoken about human rights violations under previous governments, again you are absolutely wrong. Look at Amnesty’s website and you will see a catalogue of documented human rights violations during the 30 year rule of former President Maumon Abdul Gayoom. These include torture, unfair trials, and repression of peaceful political activity. No one has been brought to justice for these violations.
Again if you look at Amnesty’s website, you will see Amnesty’s statements about the detention of Abdulla Yameen, flogging, and detention of a prisoner of conscience under the Presidency of Mohamed Nasheed.
Please do not justify human rights violations because they are committed by people you support. Raise your voice against them whether you side with the government or the opposition.
the type of mindset that is not one sided..mohamed nasheed is the one who said on public television that some people needed some time to go drunk in 24 hours..and not be in a right state of mind .. hes the one who put stone idols on an island in the country ,,and some r talkin abt thugs n gangsters here put by the maumoon regime dont u see the thugs put out on the streets of male by mdp mp reeko moosa manik who funded them had saved them whenever the police arrested any of them btw these are facts check them if u wana there are smss that give evidence to these kinda acts commanding the police to release some criminals in the nasheed regime by some of his hot air cronies ..didnt alhaan .. ali waheed get rich overnight since they joined mdp when they were in power..people dnt see one side look to both sides .. didnt mohamed nasheed keep gasim and yamin in military custody and police custody .. didnt anni truly order to pepper spray or use tear gas on protestors if ur blind on one eye u wont see these things .. now even after hes out of power hes forcing through nice beautiful looking means to create havoc in the country saying democracy democracy .. the guy is using an iron fist even in his own party .. mohamed nasheed is an anarchist who trys to look like a democratic activist ..and btw in the maldives its not only annis supporters that are living ..there r more people who r against him than supporting him ..the guys was a nut who was so dumb he forgot he was president and resigned on his own and on public televition .. makes me cry with laughter listening to his lies abt a gun being pointed to his head and he was forced to do it .. if there were such people then i guess the maldivian military had gotten hold of invisible suits that make them invisible to the media and all the news reporters .. truth is he did a dumb thin by resighnin on his own .. and i guess he realized the other day the thing he did in his not so sane 24 hour mind .. and is lying his ass off to the world and to the maldivian people but mr former president sad to say we rnt savages to be so unintelligent i mean seriously r u joking ..or are u a joke makes me sad everytime i look at you boo hoo
and btw look the latest findings show an uninhabited island was given to his personal secretary prepaid shiuna (female)without even goin for a bid now what kinda democratic govenment would do that and with 10 million dollars in her bank account these are also facts and not lies i wonder what she did to get the 10 million dollars in 3 years even the best theives dont do that in 3 years
still lying still decieving yea he was democratically elected bt should the people just wait around till the guy with his undemocratic freinds robbed the whole country .. hes the guy who said to give him a laptop and one resort and that he will run the country .. thats right he said this too and this is also a fact there are these things on recorded video and audio in front of a lotta people .. so ask ur self what does this guy think he is ???
if anyone was a dictator the former president of the maldives mr nasheed was one .. he had all the qualitys and he did everything also in this way difference is he put a nice face infront of his iron clad fist ..i mean the guy said that he ruled only the people from his party and this is also a fact … and one of his closed gundaa mps said abt the flats n houses that they were building to decrease the housing problems in male and the country that only after the mdp party members get a house or a flat that another maldivian citizen will get a roof on there heads isnt this dictatorship tell me .didnt hitler do these stuff in the past.god come see and start talking these are facts to be seen on widescreen televistion in the maldives .. the guys a dictator pure and real wearing a saints mask trying to divide this country.
Its funny that if one doesnt support Mr nasheed, then he becomes a supporter of Gayyoom. If one raises ones voice for his rights, then he becomes Gayyooms supporter. it looks like nasheed is obsessed with gayyoom. There are people who do not belong to any party, with their individual opinions as well in this country. There are people beyond MDP, but Mr Nasheed forgets that. He believes only his party constitutes the Maldives.Yes Gayyoom was a dictator, his govt was full of corruption but was MR Nasheed any better. As a president he was a failure. Why are people talking of 7th Feb, it all started from the time he came into power. He was arrogant, self opiniated and devalued the professional people of this country.Look at the destruction of some sectors like the health, where when health professionals objected to certain issues, the president himself mocked, passed sarcastic remarks in public and was willing to sack all and bring professionals from near by countries to run the show….what an attitude coming from the president!!!. when he deducted the civilservants salaries due to economic crisis, it didnt end his increasing number of political posts with high end salaries and when they objected they get labelled aas Maumoons cronies.nasheed is a failure, who could not even keep his cabinet together. He had no negotiating skills, had never sat down to talk on any issue that distressed the public and finally when protests start, the only thing he can do is a feign a deaf ear and ask his activists to come out on to stre rntlyequires a psychiatry assessment. he blatantly lies on media, see the amount of lies even post resignation, first he said gunpoint as if a gun was placed at his temple, then he said it was literal, then he said MNDF went against him because he did not give the keeps to the gun vault.. why does he have to tell these lies to get support. there are issues that need to be investigated that led to his resignation but why didnt he tell it initially when he sat down with his cabinet prior to his resignstion, why did he resign inspite of advice otjerwise from his cabinet, why didnt he say it on media when he was announcing it a press conference. Doesnt make sense. Was Nasheed scared.. knowing him, i dont think. Then why??? He said hes resigning because he doesnt want outside influence in this country but now hes the one saying that 40,000 americans, some germans, english they have signed to come and join his protest campaign. is he acting like a person who really love this country?? is he behaving like a democratic leader.when at his gatherings, speakers are using filth, talking about torching places, killing wife and children of MNdf/police,, he supports these thoughts and is seen clapping and laughing. He brought his own downfall and if elected again also he will fail.MDP should find another presidential candidate for elections
yet again today !! http://youtu.be/We1CWIvDsOA
Before I begin this complaint, I would like say that I strongly condemn any acts of violence. The securtiy force should not be allowed to use any brutal force against civillians and and violation should be taken very seriously..
I also would like to say that it is also unacceptable for people to bully and attack the police. Just because they wear a uniform doesnt make them any less human.
I know there is a lot of unjust in this world and what I have to say here today is not the biggest issue the world is facing. None the less I would like to send these points across. Maldivians have been complaining about the international media and the international communities for taking sides with our ex president Mr. Mohamed Nasheed for quite a while now. He was very successful at labelling the Maldivians who don’t support him as religious extremists so the world would stop listening to them. Far from the truth but he knew exactly the right card to play. I saw the biased views on British media on a large scale, with the exception of BBC. It some how didn’t surprise me as a lot of the journalists are known to work for him.
Since he rose to international fame by using the label given to him by this organisation, I went on to see how Amnesty was reporting on the political crisis in the Maldives. I was alarmed and saddened to find that Amnesty Maldives failed to report on any illegal arrest or brutal force used by the securtiy force during Nasheed’s government. You even failed to report on the on that high profile case that went on to UN.(The case on illegal detention on Judge Abdulla)We even made it to Washington Post on “Biggest protests and crackdowns of the decade” in 2011. but failed to report on that protest either.

According to Amnesty Maldives reports the only things that happened during his presidency was a case on a blogger who was arrested and even then Amnesty goes on to clarify that it was an arrest requested by the Islamic Ministry, and another case relating to Islam too. I am not sure if Amnesty is really aware of the one sidedness of Amnesty Maldives.
Mohamed Nasheed kicked in the face of the very people who helped to free him by taking the law in his own hands, intimidating the media and locking up his oppositions. By failing to condemn or simply ignoring it meant that Amnesty were some how encouraging those acts or it’s ok for some people to take away others civil rights.
The website is very busy doing its job now that Nasheed is no longer the president.
I find this very hard to accept and its not fair on the men and women who work tirelessly everyday for justice and humanity.
who are u amnesty international .. u look like an organisation supporting certain induviduals this is a soverign nation and u seem to promote 1 person i donno why im maldivian too and i dont support the acts carried out by former president mohamed nasheed he was the one behind the torching of the court houses the police buildings and all ..and hes the one promoting anarchy in the maldives .. the police and the mndf are also maldivians and that cannot be denied .. what kinda amnesty international are u pls dont be one sided so much as u are being .. this is my view of you now ..
where was your reports when mohamed nasheed was an outright criminal when he was in power he abused the maldivian people he thought he could play with the maldivian people like toys but in the end i belive he got what he so truly deserved for being so arrogant he stood alone and he couldnt get all the tribes together he joked at the people and mocked our religion in some cases..
