Over 100 people, mostly students, attended the meeting with Rhuhel Ahmed - former Guantánamo detainee in Warsaw on April 2, 2009. Ahmed’s visit in Poland coincided with the launch of AI Poland’s Counter terror with Justice campaign.
“At the time when some people say, that tortures are justified during the ‘war on terror’ we have an unique possibility to hear testimony of the person that survived the hell of tortures in Kandahar and Guantanamo”, said Draginja Nadazdin, Director of Amnesty International’s section in Poland, introducing Rhuhel Ahmed to the public.

Close Guantánamo action in Belgium

We built a big cage and had big hellium ballons in the shape of orange jumpsuits. We were not received by US authorities but three belgian EP joined us. 60 persons were present at the action. Wa also had some images on the TV noon news and the main belgian press agency (Belga) made a PR.

We organized a march Sunday January 11th 2009 to close Guantanamo in Montréal (Québec) Canada. It was a very cold day and we were lucky to get around 50 activists, even children, to support our action.
As Omar Khadr is a Canadian citizen, he is of importance to all of us so we were holding mask of Omar during the whole march. We only distributed some pamphlets because it was too cold to ask to sign the petition. The media coverage was intense, which we are happy about it.
We could not take too much pictures and videos as my camera froze. But we will try to do a short video for youtube with what we got.
