So from the UN’s Ban Ki-moon to government ministers around the world – my trips overseas are often about pushing a human rights issue at a high level.
This week I’m in Spain and it’s a privilege in this job to be able on the one hand to talk to a victim of a human rights violation during the Franco era, then move on to raise that very issue with the people now in charge. Their manner is deadly serious – and rightly so, as they’re part of a a debate that could save millions of lives.
Here at the UN in New York the discussion is about an Arms Trade Treaty which will be agreed in fewer than four months.

At a meeting with NGOs on the side-lines of the UN Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) negotiations in New York, China made the claim that it does not transfer arms to conflict states in Africa.
That claim is simply not true and China has clearly forgotten about the notorious “Ship of Shame”. We are happy to remind them.

Todos los gobiernos dicen que quieren acabar con la circulación de armas ilegales, pero tras escuchar a muchos de ellos hoy en la ONU, parece evidente que son pocos los que están dispuestos a hacer algo al respecto.
Esto es así porque una mayor implicación se traduciría en una mayor transparencia a la hora de informar sobre la transferencia de armas, lo cual provoca un inmediato malestar entre los gobiernos.
