Il y a un an, plusieurs manifestations pacifiques contre la répression gouvernementale en Azerbaïdjan se sont heurtées à la force brute des autorités. Le tour de vis qui s’en est suivi a débouché sur l’incarcération de 17 militants et figures politiques, dont 14 se trouvent toujours derrière les barreaux.
Peu après, le 14 mai, la chanson Running Scared, présentée par l’Azerbaïdjan dans le cadre de l’Eurovision, a remporté le concours, donnant à l’Azerbaïdjan le droit d’accueillir l’édition 2012.
Cela est doublement ironique.

Hace un año, las autoridades hicieron frente a una serie de manifestaciones pacíficas en contra de la represión del gobierno en Azerbaiyán con una fuerza brutal. Las duras medidas represivas que se emprendieron después tuvieron como resultado el encarcelamiento de un total de 17 personas entre activistas y figuras políticas, 14 de las cuales todavía continúan entre rejas.
Poco después, el 14 de mayo, la canción de Azerbaiyán “Running Scared” (Corriendo asustados) gana el concurso de Eurovisión, lo que concede al país el derecho a acoger la competición en 2012.

One year ago, a series of peaceful protests against government repression in Azerbaijan were met with brute force by the authorities. The clampdown that followed resulted in the imprisonment of 17 activists and political figures, 14 of whom are still behind bars today.
Shortly afterwards, on 14 May, Azerbaijan’s entry “Running Scared” won the Eurovision song contest, giving Azerbaijan the right to host the 2012 competition.

Around 30 people were arrested in Baku today when part of a virtual protest against the government in Azerbaijan became reality.
Small groups of people gathered spontaneously in different areas of central Baku, responding to an 11 March Facebook event that over 4,100 people signed up to.
