En Chine, j’étais journaliste. J’ai toutefois décidé de démissionner au bout de quatre ans, car les autorités ne me laissaient pas publier la vérité. J’ai commencé ensuite à travailler dans une ONG ; je faisais des recherches sur des questions sociales.

J’étais notamment préoccupée par la situation des victimes de sources d’eau contaminées et celle des personnes ayant contracté le VIH/sida après une transfusion sanguine, et j’aidais les groupes vulnérables à défendre leurs droits.

J’étais l’une des cybermilitantes les plus actives, donnant mon opinion sur la politique, diffusant des informations et organisant des activités.

Liu Xiaobo’s empty chair holds more than the Chinese realise

There is going to be one empty place at this year’s Nobel Peace Prize awards ceremony. Amongst the pomp and circumstance, before a packed house of a thousand invited guests and dignitaries gathered for the century-old event, the chair of this year’s recipient, Liu Xiaobo, will be vacant.

Liu Xiaobo would have sat on the podium alongside the members of the Nobel Committee in Oslo’s cavernous City Hall as he was honoured for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China. He would have given a speech, accepted his medal and diploma and continued his call for peaceful legal and political reform in China. He would have posed for pictures, given interviews, briefly enjoyed the glow of international recognition and then he would have gone home.

Close Guantánamo actions in New York and Washington D.C.

Washington DC: On a chilly January 11, 2009, Amnesty International USA joined with Witness Against Torture for a very orange rally to shut Guantanamo. Approximately 250 people took part.

On Tuesday, January 13th during the evening rush hour, the New York Civil Liberties Union and Amnesty International USA held a candlelight vigil to close Guantanamo in front of the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street. Approximately 50 people attended.
