Facing intimidation in the fight for human rights in Russia

Stanislav Dmitrievskii is a veteran human rights defender and political activist from Nizhnii Novgorod, a town East of Moscow.

During recent months he has actively participated in numerous demonstrations for the right to freedom of assembly and for fair elections. And he has been repeatedly detained.

Diario de una visita de alto nivel: el secretario general visita España

Como secretario general de Amnistía Internacional tengo muchas funciones, y una de las fundamentales es entrevistarme con destacadas figuras públicas de todo el mundo.

Mis viajes al extranjero consisten a menudo en plantear cuestiones de derechos humanos al más alto nivel, desde Ban Ki-moon, secretario general de la ONU, hasta ministros de gobiernos de todo el mundo.

Esta semana estoy en España y gracias al puesto que ocupo tengo el privilegio de poder hablar con una persona que fue víctima de una violación de derechos humanos en la época de Franco, y después plantear esa misma cuestión a las personas que actualmente ocupan puestos de responsabilidad.

South Africa has made great progress in combating the HIV epidemic in the last three years. Yet people in rural communities, particularly women, still struggle to protect their health because of poverty and discrimination.

The beautiful and lush hills of northern KwaZulu-Natal belie the realities of the people living there. Remote, extremely poor with high food insecurity and alarming levels of HIV infection. Nearly 40 per cent of women attending antenatal clinics are HIV positive.

Quatorze hommes ont disparu en Mauritanie

Des policiers sont venus à 3 heures du matin ; leurs visages étaient dissimulés et ils avaient une liste. Ils lisaient un par un les noms figurant sur la liste et demandaient aux détenus de venir avec eux. Personne ne savait ce qui se passait.

Le 23 mai 2011, 14 hommes ont été enlevés dans leur cellule par des membres de la police militaire à la prison centrale de Nouakchott, la capitale de la Mauritanie. Tous ont été reconnus coupables de faits liés au terrorisme et au moins six d’entre eux ont été torturés en garde à vue avant leur enlèvement. Personne n’a revu ces hommes ni eu de leurs nouvelles depuis ; seuls leurs ravisseurs savent s’ils sont vivants ou morts. S’ils sont vivants, leur sécurité suscite une grande inquiétude.
