There are many elements to my role as Secretary General of Amnesty International and a vital one is to meet with senior public figures around the world.
So from the UN’s Ban Ki-moon to government ministers around the world – my trips overseas are often about pushing a human rights issue at a high level.
This week I’m in Spain and it’s a privilege in this job to be able on the one hand to talk to a victim of a human rights violation during the Franco era, then move on to raise that very issue with the people now in charge. Hace solo unas semanas se encontraron los cadáveres de 150 personas frente a las costas de las islas Kerkennah, pertenecientes a Túnez. Eran personas que habían huido del violento conflicto de Libia buscando seguridad en Europa. Su muerte pasó a engrosar la cifra de personas refugiadas y migrantes que han perdido la vida tratando de llegar a Europa: más de 1.400 en lo que va de año.
No es un problema nuevo. Desde hace años, refugiados y migrantes desesperados emprenden el mismo viaje peligroso, en el que han muerto miles de personas.

Some 150 bodies were found in the sea off the Tunisian Kerkennah islands only a few weeks ago. These bodies were of people who fled the violent conflict in Libya to seek safety in Europe. Their death added to the toll of refugees and migrants that die trying to reach Europe; more than 1,800 so far this year.
This is not a new problem; desperate refugees and migrants have undertaken the same perilous journey for years and thousands have died.

La negligencia de las autoridades italianas ha convertido la isla de Lampedusa en el escenario de una crisis humanitaria.
Durante las últimas semanas y meses, miles de tunecinos, en su mayoría, hombres jóvenes, se han visto atrapados en esta minúscula isla tras huir de la pobreza en la que se encuentra sumido Túnez desde el comienzo de los disturbios políticos en el país.
Faltan duchas, aseos y albergues. Ahora mismo, en torno a 4.000 personas duermen a la intemperie. Los más afortunados duermen en tiendas improvisadas que han levantado con trozos de láminas de plástico que han encontrado. Otros simplemente duermen sobre el pavimento y en las playas, sin tan siquiera una manta con la que protegerse del frío. Pese a los esfuerzos realizados por las agencias de ayuda humanitaria sobre el terreno, la mayoría de los tunecinos se encuentran sin tener las necesidades más básicas cubiertas. It’s a sunny Sunday morning in the quiet neighbourhood of Zona Rosa in Mexico City. Sarah, (our campaigner on Mexico) and I have just stopped to reflect on what has so far been a whirlwind trip.
It all started at the crack of dawn six days ago when we boarded a packed flight from London to Mexico City. Our purpose? To launch The Invisibles, a new film in four parts documenting the journey of Central American migrants travelling through Mexico and the brutal reality of life on the move.
