On Sunday 22 April, I visited Bodo community in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. The community was devastated by two major oil spills in 2008, caused by operational failures from Shell pipelines.
The Bodo community have been fighting for their rights – after failing to secure justice in Nigeria, they are now bringing a case against Shell in the UK. I visited Bodo to update the community about what Amnesty International, in partnership with Nigerian NGO the Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD), is doing to help the community tell the world about their plight, and in our broader campaign to get Shell and the Nigerian authorities to take responsibility for the devastation they have created across the Niger Delta. I also updated the Bodo community about the global week of action on the Niger delta, taking place this week, and of the activities being undertaken by Amnesty International Sections and supporters in more than 15 countries across the world. Dimanche 22 avril, je me suis rendu dans la région de Bodo, dans le delta du Niger, au Nigeria. Cette région a été dévastée par deux déversements pétroliers majeurs en 2008, engendrés par des fautes d’exploitation sur un oléoduc de Shell.
Les habitants de la région de Bodo se battent pour leurs droits : après avoir cherché en vain à obtenir justice au Nigeria, ils engagent des poursuites judiciaires contre Shell au Royaume-Uni. Je me suis rendu dans la région de Bodo pour informer la communauté sur ce qu’Amnesty International, en partenariat avec le Centre pour l’environnement, les droits humains et le développement du Nigéria (CEHRD), une ONG nigériane, entreprend pour aider les habitants afin que le monde sache ce qu’ils endurent. Je les ai informés de notre vaste campagne visant à amener Shell et les autorités nigérianes à assumer leurs responsabilités quant aux ravages qu’elles ont causés dans le delta du Niger. J’ai aussi mis les habitants de Bodo au courant de la semaine mondiale d’action sur le delta du Niger, qui se déroule du 21 au 29 avril 2012, et des actions menées par les sections et les sympathisants d’Amnesty International dans plus de 15 pays à travers le monde.

The oil continues to leak into the Niger Delta, fouling the water, killing the fish and slowly poisoning the people who live there. It has been that way for decades.
The spills are the legacy of a half-century of exploration and development in the oil-rich region. They have devastated the lives of local residents who rely on the area’s resources for their food, water and livelihoods and left many wondering about the future.
