WSF2009: A wonderful unifying experience

wsf-rain27 of January: We are among the ninety thousand people who have registered in this years’ world social forum. Belem is hot and humid. We are getting ready for the opening march – the atmosphere is festive, it is only a few weeks to one of Brazil’s most famous and well attended carnivals.

The make up of the participants totally diverse and representative of the geography of the city – people from all around the world, communities from the most remote places on the planet, thousands of organisations, movements, individuals.

We are going to the World Social Forum.

During the next few weeks, hundreds of thousands are expected to flood the city of Belem in Brazil for the 8th World Social Forum (WSF) and we twenty delegates from Amnesty International will be amongst them.

The choice of Belem, as the gatekeeper of the Amazon, is more than significant for this gathering. The importance of land, habitat and the environment will be at the forefront of many people’s minds, including many of those coming as part of the Amnesty International delegation.
